Jeff Herman Supports Legislation to Protect Sexual Abuse Survivors
Attorney Jeff Herman is a staunch advocate for victims of sexual abuse and assault. For the past 25 years, Jeff and his team at Herman Law, a firm he founded, fight for justice for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. Based in Boca Raton, Florida, Herman Law has successfully litigated cases in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Jeff Herman has won cases against clergy, schools, daycare, pre-school, and after-school programs, hospitals, psychiatric treatment centers, and college campuses.
Jeff stays abreast of statutes of limitations, federal and state laws, and damage caps, etc. nationwide to provide the best possible defense for his clients and he has been carefully watching the proposed legislation in the state of New York. State Senator Brad Hoylman, a Democrat representing Manhattan, recently introduced a bill, the Child Victims Act (S.809). This bill, should it become law, would eliminate the statute of limitations in child sexual abuse cases in New York State and extend the window for a survivor to press charges from one year to 50 years. As a “voice for victims,” it is critical for Jeff and his team to be knowledgeable about state statutes. Support for the bill received a needed boost from actor Corey Feldman and Team USA volleyball player Sarah Powers-Barnhard, herself an abuse survivor. In explaining her support for the bill, Powers-Barnhard stated, “New Yorkers should be ashamed of lawmakers who are effectively protecting hidden sexual predators.”In practice for more than 25 years, Jeff and his team have represented more than 1,000 clients. In fighting for justice for his clients, Jeff has received millions in monetary settlements. In one high profile case, Jeff won $10 million for his client against a pedophile priest. In another example, a young boy sued a charter school network and was awarded $5.25 million.
